Edinburgh Dog & Cat Home

City Cabs are thrilled to share with you our recent partnership with the Edinburgh Dog & Cat Home. City Cabs value the hard work and effort that goes on behind the scenes at the Home, and we jumped at the chance to work with them. It’s remarkable that they’ve been helping the pets of Edinburgh since 1883 (before the first car was invented), and when taxis were horse and carriage).

Over the years, City Cabs have had many customers asking if we offered a collection and drop-off service for charity donations. As part of our new partnership, our drivers will uplift household goods to drop off at the Edinburgh Dog & Cat Home Stockbridge and Morningside charity shops, or donations of towels, blankets, toys and treats for the animals to the Home in Seafield, to help them on their mission to rescue, reunite and rehome lost and abandoned animals from across Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Edinburgh Taxi Outing 2016

Edinburgh Taxi Outing 2016Every year on the second Tuesday in June, Edinburgh’s taxi drivers take time off to treat some very special children to a day at the seaside for the Edinburgh Taxi Trade Kids Outing. The event is still going strong and is celebrating its 70th year.

All the taxis usually leave from Murrayfield at around 10am. This year they are congregating at Edinburgh Zoo Car Park. They will then make their way down the Royal Mile, along London Road, through Portobello and arriving in Musselburgh at around 11.30am.

From there the taxis head out along the coast road, through Cockenzie, Port Seton and Gullane, and finally ending up at Dirleton where they enjoy the rest of their day.

Drivers go to incredible efforts to dress up their taxis with whatever they can get their hands on. In recent years we’ve had Postman Pat, Shrek, a Bi-Plane and even a Cow and Elephant. Last years winner of the ‘Best Dressed Taxi Award’ had a Toy Story themed taxi, Woody was the driver of a Mr Potato head designed taxi. It’s humbling the amount of effort everyone puts into the event but it’s clear why they do it when you see the faces of the kids who attend.

If you are lucky enough to see the police escorted parade then be sure to keep your distance, drivers, children and parents are usually armed with water pistols and water balloons.

Macmillan Coffee Morning

Macmillan Coffee MorningMacmillan Cancer – Worlds Biggest Coffee Morning

On 26th September City Cabs took part in the world’s biggest coffee to support Macmillan Cancer Research. The event has been held annually since 1990 and has so far raised a staggering £113 million.

Macmillan do a fantastic job in sharing support to families that are going through a difficult time due to cancer diagnosis. It is estimated that there are currently 2 million people living with cancer in the UK. Figures suggest that by 2030 there will be 4 million living with cancer in the UK.

We wanted to show our support to this amazing charity by getting involved with the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. We asked the staff to dust of their pinnies and mixing bowls to start baking. We had a varied selection of cakes such as muffins, cupcakes, carrot cake and even chocolate brownies.
As well as cake baking we held various competitions like guess how many hundreds and thousands are on the cake and guess which cup has the double espresso.

Overall we raised an amazing £1,200 towards Macmillan Cancer Research.
Thank you to everyone who visited us on the day and thank you to everyone who supplied us with the delicious selection of cakes.

LadyBoys Charity Event

LadyBoys Charity Event

It began in 2012 when we were contacted by the LadyBoys. Their intention was to reward taxi drivers, who over the years have provided them with a first class service in transporting their customers to and from the show during the Festival.

As a thank you, they offered free tickets to anyone in the trade wishing to have a good night out and a chance to meet up with all their colleagues, family and friends. It was also suggested that we incorporate this with a collection at the end of the night, with all monies raised being donated to a charity of our choice. As we are involved in the Edinburgh Taxi Trade Children’s Outing Charity, which is run by a Committee of Taxi Drivers, we gladly took them up on their offer and over the past 3 years, the tickets have proved extremely popular, always a sell-out night, with all involved in the trade and we have raised in excess of £5,000.

For the first 2 years we donated all monies raised to our own charity, we have decided this year however, to change our charity and donate all to Macmillan Cancer Support, Maggie’s Centre, St. Columba’s Hospice and as a thank you to the Ladyboys some of the money raised will go back to their own charity, the Pattaya Street Kids.

Finally may this arrangement long continue.
